This is the story of Frederick Alvin Davis II the Founding Father of the Black
American Homeland
Frederick Alvin Davis II the Founding Father of the Black American
Homeland was born (June 17, 1830-1926) in Norfolk, Virginia to freedmen
Frederick Alvin Davis I (1805-1875) and Wilhelmenia Delores Davis (1812-
1892). Frederick Alvin Davis I (the Father) was the son of wealthy Slave
Master, US Senator, Shipping Magnet and Founder of the Bank of Norfolk,
Robert Crawford Davis II (1775-1850). Robert Crawford Davis II was the son
of General Robert Crawford Davis I (1740-1810) who fought alongside
George Washington as a General, was signatory to the Declaration of
Independence and was a delegate representing Virginia during the ratification
of the Articles of Confederation the first Constitution. Frederick Alvin Davis
I mother was a 15-year-old house slave girl Annabel Davis (1790-1860).
Annabel had several children with Robert Crawford Davis II and under a
written agreement promised to free the children once they turned 16 years old.
Robert Crawford Davis II and Annabel would marry in secret after the death
of his first wife (Annabel Davis did not become a free person until the death
of Robert Crawford Davis II in 1850). Robert Crawford Davis White wife,
Mary Wells Davis (1780-1825) was a sickly woman and produced him only
one child Terry Lynn Davis (1800-1880) however, Mary Wells Davis was very
influential in the education of all the children. Frederick Alvin Davis the First
was the smartest of the children, was schooled on the plantation and was able
to enter William and Mary College in 1822 where he studied law, economics,
and accounting. After graduating from William and Mary Law School 1828
Frederick Alvin Davis I became the first Black person to be granted the right
to practice Law by a Virginia judge who was close to Robert Crawford Davis
in 1828 and would go on to manage the affairs of the 1000 acres Davis Family
Estate, Shipping Company, Bank of Norfolk and other business interest.
Recognized as a superb writer and demonstrated his knowledge of the Federal
and State laws, Frederick Alvin Davis I was hired on numerous occasions to
draft bills for the Virginia State House of Representatives or Assembly
although he was unable to vote himself, it was under these privileged,
unconventional and contrasting circumstances Frederick Alvin Davis II was
born and raised.
Frederick Alvin Davis II was a tall athletic kid, bigger and stronger than most
kids the same age with great looks and intelligence to match, he was already 6
feet tall by the age of fourteen. Frederick Alvin Davis II immersed himself in
his grandfather’s extensive library and his aunt Terri Lynn taught him French,
German and Spanish…….
